Thanksgiving Mass for pilgrims travelling from Ireland to Rome for the Canonisation of Blessed Pope John XXIII and Blessed Pope John Paul II

There will be an opportunity for pilgrims travelling from Ireland to Rome for the Canonisation of Blessed Popes John XXIII and John Paul II to give thanks to God together at a special Mass on the day after the Canonisation. Cardinal Seán Brady, Archbishop of Armagh and Primate of All Ireland will be the principal celebrant of the Mass, in the Basilica of Santa Maria in Domnica, which is close to the Irish College. Pilgrims will be welcome to visit the Irish College for light refreshments after the Mass.

 Family, Church and Pope Francis: A course for Parishioners

 8th – 12th September 2014

Pope time for Parishioners

During these days in the city of the apostles Peter and Paul, participants will be afforded an opportunity to reflect on Pope Francis’ call to live the Joy of the Gospel. The week includes a series of talks, liturgies and guided visits to significant Churches and Basilicas in Rome, a day of spiritual recollection and reflection as well as a pilgrimage to the shrine of St. Francis at Assisi and an opportunity to attend a General Audience with Pope Francis.

Presentations will be given by the following:

  • Msgr. Ciarán O’Carroll (Pontifical Irish College, Rome) will visit St. Peter’s Basilica, the Basilica of St. John Lateran and the Church of St. Peter in Chains, drawing together the theme of family in the early centuries of Christian life in Rome.
  • Dr Patricia Kieran (Mary Immaculate College, Limerick) will examine the Pope’s Apostolic Exhortation and its implications for faith formation and the family.
  • Fr. Tom Norris (Pontifical Irish College, Rome) will lead a reflection on ‘The Art of Loving – the Secret for Church and Family’.
  • Fr. George Hayes (Pontifical Irish College, Rome) will look at the use of art and the aesthetic in nurturing one’s relationship with God.
  • Fr. Hugh Clifford (Pontifical Irish College, Rome) will offer insights into the area of family, vocation and formation.

The cost of the course is €750.  Places are limited. A deposit of €300 is required to secure a place. Travel arrangements to Rome are the responsibility of participants but airport transfers to the College are included in the price.  Rooms are en-suite with meals half board.  Those who wish to arrive early or remain following the conclusion of the course are welcome to do so subject to the availability of rooms.

Mass for Anniversary of Fr Ragheed Ganni

Mass will be celebrated on Sunday June 2nd for the anniversary of the death of Fr Ragheed Ganni, past student of the College, martyred for the faith in Iraq in 2007. The celebrant of the Mass will be Fr Efrem Luay Dinkha.

 

Ordination of Deacons – Easter Tuesday 2013

On Easter Tuesday, 2nd April 2013, Most Reverend Dr Dermot Clifford, Archbishop of Cashel and Emly, will ordain four seminarians of the Pontifical Irish College, Rome, to the Diaconate. The Mass of Ordination will take place at 10.30am in Basilica Santi Giovanni e Paolo. Those to be ordained Deacons are: Liam Boyle (Diocese of Raphoe), Brian Fitzpatrick (Diocese of Dromore), Dominic McGrattan (Diocese of Down and Connor), and Patrick O’Donoghue (Diocese of Cloyne).

‘Deacons are ministers ordained for tasks of the Church; they do not receive the ministerial priesthood, but ordination confers on them important functions in the ministry of the word, divine worship, pastoral governance and the service of charity, tasks which they must carry out under the pastoral activity of their bishop.’ – Catechism of the Catholic Church, paragraph 1596

 

Irish College seminarians serving with Pope Francis, Good Friday

Holy Week 2013 at the Irish College

The liturgies of Holy Week and Easter at the Irish College are open to the public. All welcome. Please note that the Good Friday Celebration of the Passion of the Lord will not be celebrated at the Irish College this year because the seminarians of the College have been asked to serve at the Celebration with Pope Francis in St Peter’s Basilica. The Irish College community will therefore attend that ceremony at the Vatican.

St Patrick’s Day 2013 Mass: 10am in St Patrick’s Church

Mass for the Feast of Saint Patrick will be celebrated at 10.00 on St Patrick’s Day, Sunday 17th March 2013, in St Patrick’s Church, Via Boncompagni 31, near Via Veneto. As the Mass in St Patrick’s Church will be the focal point for the Irish community in Rome and friends, and the community of the Irish College will go to St Patrick’s Church for this Mass, there will be no Mass in the Irish College on that morning.

All are welcome to the Irish College at 19.00 on Saturday 16th and Sunday 17th March 2013 for the staging of the comedy, ‘King Arthur: Crisis at Camelot’, adapted from a script by Geoff Bamber, directed by Conor McCarthy. This promises to be an evening of laughter and light-hearted enjoyment. There will be a collection on the occasion for this year’s College Lenten charity, the Sant’Egidio Community.

Please note that Mass for the Feast of Saint Patrick will be celebrated at 10.00 on St Patrick’s Day in St Patrick’s Church, Via Boncompagni 31, near Via Veneto. Lent 2013 – College Charity: Sant’Egidio Community

This years Irish College Lenten collection will go towards the Sant’Egidio Community, which cares for the poor of Rome and engages in international peace initiatives. Six of the seminarians work with the Sant’Egidio Community on one evening a week. The collection is being organised by the seminarian charity officers. There is an opportunity to contribute after 10.00 Mass on Sundays. There will also be a chance to contribute on the evenings of the St Patrick’s Day play, ‘King Arthur: Crisis at Camelot’, to be staged at the College on Saturday 16th and Sunday 17th March at 19.00.
