I felt a great sadness and shock on receiving news about the tragic death of Fr. Ragheed. I recalled the many great memories i have of him when i studied with him at the Irish College. I also recall the celebrations of his diaconate, ordination and first mass. A photograph of him giving me his first blessing i will treasure. I also recall the other memories of College life that we shared.  He was always very friendly and kind and very supportive and he had a great love of Ireland and Irish people. He had a great love to for his own people and his own country and he would have spoken many times about how life was so very difficulty for his people.

In the past week i have learned of how he touched other people's lives during the time he spent in Lough Derg, County Donegal.  I  wish to extend my sincere sympathy to Fr Ragheed's family, to his parishoners and to all affected by this tragedy.  I also express my sympathy to all present and past residents, staff and visitors to the Irish College in Rome whoose lives he touched and all past students and romans of the colleges in rome that knew him. May his soul and the soul of his cousin and the other deacons who lost their lives this week this rest in peace.

Chers amis, nous sommes en grande communion de prière avec vous tous après ce drame du père Ragheed et ses frères diacres. Nous confions à Dieu tous ces innocents et lui demandons que la paix revienne en Irak. Nous continuons à prier pour vous !

My deepest sympathy to the College at the violent death  of Father Ragheed Ganni.
He was hospitality itself to college visitors and left a lasting impression of both gentleness and courage.  He took the trouble to visit us when in Ireland. We are privileged to have known him.

On Monday 4th June I arrived on Lough Derg to do the three-day pilgrimage, without having seen the paper that morning. All but one of the pilgrims arriving that day had "done" Lough Derg previously, and like myself would have remembered Ragheed from his summers working there. I had also met Ragheed at the Irish College. The Prior of Lough Derg always says the 6.30 am Mass, and the next morning it was a very broken Prior, Msgr. Dick Mohan, who spoke to the pilgrims of how he had recently received a message from Ragheed, wishing him all the best for the three-day pilgrimage season which had started on June 1st, and then of the news of the martyrdom of Ragheed and his companions. At the entrance to the basilica on the island two photographs of Ragheed, one of him in lay clothes and one of him in liturgical attire, taken in the Irish College chapel, have been displayed, as well as a copy of the item about Ragheed from the College website.

I was sorry I could not attend the Mass Fr. Eddie McGee said for Ragheed in St. Patrick's Church, Belfast on Saturday. Condolences to his family and to all at the Irish College.

Brian Daly (Irish College, 1978-1982)
